How to Install Washroom Dispensers

Installing your commercial washroom dispensers correctly is crucial for creating a safe, hygienic and accessible environment for your washroom users. In this blog, we will guide you through key considerations when installing washroom dispensers, including installation height and the tools you’ll need, so that your business can benefit from the highest quality of washroom equipment.

Tools & Equipment You Will Need

Although the equipment you need may vary slightly depending on the washroom dispenser you are installing, most installations typically require the same basic tools. These include:

• Pencil – to mark the position of the brackets or fixing holes on the wall
• Tape Measure – to ensure your dispenser is installed at the correct height
• Drill – to drill holes in the wall using the appropriate size drill bit
• Screwdriver – to tighten the screws to secure your dispenser
• PPE – personal protective equipment should be worn when operating power tools. This may include, and is not limited to, gloves for hand protection, a mask for respiratory protection and goggles for eye protection.
• Preferred fixings – please note, Dudley Industries no longer supply fixing kits as these were often discarded, so we have removed them as part of our ongoing mission to become more sustainable.

Safety Information

Before taking a look at the different types of washroom dispenser and their installations, here are some important safety considerations:

• All instructions should be read and followed thoroughly for safe installation. We recommend keeping instructions safe for future reference.
• Remove all packaging carefully and check contents for any damage prior to commencing installation.
• Before commencing and drilling into walls, check that there are no hidden electrical cables or water pipes.
• When using power tools, always ensure you wear the correct PPE and operate following the manufacturer’s instructions.

Paper Towel Dispensers

All businesses should provide effective hand drying solutions to help reduce the spread of harmful germs and bacteria. Our extensive range of paper towel dispensers delivers a contemporary washroom aesthetic with added durability. They are also easy to clean, supporting the highest hygiene standards.

Installation Height

Our recommended installation height for a paper towel dispenser in a general washroom is 1300 – 1400mm from the floor. This height considers the average height of washroom users, promoting user comfort whilst preventing it from being knocked over or causing obstruction in the room.

If you are installing your paper towel dispenser above the counter, it should be installed approximately 300mm from the top of the counter.

In accessible washrooms, you want to ensure the dispenser is positioned in a way that allows easy access for individuals with disabilities or those using mobility aids such as wheelchairs. As such, we recommend installing your paper towel dispenser 780 – 1000mm from the floor.

Soap Dispensers

Provide a hygienic washroom environment by supplying effective hand washing facilities. At Dudley Industries, we supply a range of solutions ranging from compact 375ml up to 2L capacity liquid and foam soap dispensers, ensuring there’s a solution for your business’ individual preferences.

With such a range of dispensers available, it’s important to note that automatic, manual and hand sanitiser dispensers may require different methods of installation, so you should refer to the correct guide for your specific product.

Installation Height

Both our soap and hand sanitiser dispensers follow the same recommended installation heights.

In general commercial washrooms, we recommend positioning the soap dispenser approximately 1050 – 1150mm from the floor, in close proximity to the sink so that everyone can easily access the soap without difficulty – encouraging proper hand hygiene.

Where the dispenser is positioned above the counter, it should be 300mm from the top of the surface.

Finally, in accessible washrooms the soap or sanitiser dispenser should be placed 780 – 1000mm from the floor, lower than in a general washroom so that people with accessibility issues or using mobility aids can access them as easily as possible.

Toilet Roll Dispensers

From jumbo toilet paper dispensers to small dispensers for domestic rolls, Dudley Industries’ toilet paper dispensers come in a wide range of styles and designs to ensure they are long lasting no matter how heavy the footfall is in your washroom.

Fortunately, the installation of the varying toilet roll dispensers is very similar. However, the filling and refilling and general maintenance and cleaning can vary significantly between products, so it’s important to read through the user guide to ensure your product works seamlessly for your washroom users.

Installation Height

The recommended installation height for a toilet paper dispenser in a general bathroom is 750mm from the floor. It’s important for the dispenser to be within easy reach of the toilet, particularly in spaces where there are likely to be children or people with restricted mobility.

As all users are sitting down whether that be in a general or accessible washroom, accessible washrooms should naturally have their toilet roll dispensers installed at a similar height. However, we recommend that it is slightly higher, approximately 780 – 1000mm from the floor, due to toilets often being higher to make it easier for people with mobility issues to sit down and stand up.

Unlike our other dispensers, our Wudu Wash Stations sit on the floor, so height is not an installation consideration. We recommend that the Wudu Wash Station is securely fixed against the wall, and our installation guide will take you through the different wall, waste and water fittings.
